As a longtime fan of historical fiction, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It combines a compelling love story with a richly detailed portrayal of life in 1630s Massachusetts, bringing to life a fascinating period of American history that many readers may know little about.
What drew me in most was Sarah's struggle to navigate two worlds and two identities. Her journey feels authentic, emotional, and deeply human. The romance between Sarah and John is beautifully developed, with plenty of chemistry, heartfelt moments, and some steamy scenes that add passion and depth to their relationship.
I also appreciated the historical insights woven throughout the novel. The descriptions of colonial life, Indigenous communities, disease, conflict, and survival create an immersive reading experience that feels both educational and engaging. Knowing that many of the people and events depicted are connected to the ancestors of Amber, who wrote the book, made the story even more meaningful and interesting to me.
The author does an excellent job of balancing romance, history, and complex questions of identity and belonging. The result is a novel that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction, historical romance, and stories about resilience, love, and finding one's place in a complicated world.
Oh my goodness, this book was INCREDIBLE. I was savoring the last few chapters. The writing is so effortless. The story was profound. I’m just so amazed with all of the research the author did into her ancestry and made it into this beautiful historical fiction novel …. excited for my book club to read this 💕
I found the book to be an exciting combination of historical life and times in 1600’s New England and a passionate love story. If you like history and romance novels, you’ll like this.
I just finished this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love historical fiction so this story made it very interesting to read about real people. The writing was very descriptive so it was easy to visualize the settings. I really loved all of the characters. I felt like I was back living in the 1600s! I highly recommend this book. and I look forward to a sequel.
Really enjoyed this book! I don’t often read historical fiction but was very impressed with this book. It pulls you in immediately, and I found myself looking forward to the evenings when I would have time for reading it. The characters were well developed and likable and the story itself transported you to another realm. Very enjoyable!
I am not an avid reader of historical fiction, so I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is written beautifully and the author does a wonderful job of depicting life during the early years of colonization. It is a captivating read and is hard to put down once you start.
Just buy it. You will like it.
This well-researched, immersive book gives such a fascinating look into colonial New England. The bleakness of the time is palpable within the pages. I love a book that inspires me to look up more about history I didn't previously know. I learned about the Antinomian Controversy and the Pequot War and enjoyed looking up more about them. This book is pretty spicy, which I didn't expect. But I liked the ending and how the story wrapped up.
